A look at
practical, technical solutions through software, hardware,
gadgets and systems that can increase your personal productivity
and allow you to gain back time to make your day more effective
and efficient. This interactive, informative and entertaining
discussion will help you identify specific technology solutions
that can assist your efforts for successful management and make
you aware of various tools that other educational leaders are
having success implementing.
Symposium -Pene
Chambers
Wow,
Technology Changes Fast. Are You Aware, Ready and Safe?
Do
we need to go where "young people go"? Do we have safe schools,
safe children and controlled access without eliminating very
good new resources? Are BLOGS, podcasts, social networks, etc.
educational? What about webcams? Are they safe? How do you
monitor student computer and Internet use? Do you? Do you have
an Acceptable Use Policy or school policies that were written
with new technology in mind? Is staff on the same page with
students regarding what is allowed in the school setting?
General Session - Dr. David
Capuzzi
The Many Facets
of Grief: Proactive
Approaches for
Coping with Loss
Loss and transition are two of life’s “constants”. No one can
expect to live a life that is free of challenges,
disappointments, or change. Yet, it seems that society does a
better job of preparing us to cope with the festivities that
accompany a birth, a marriage, a job promotion, or attainment of
a life long dream. We are better at knowing what to do and say
when others experience positive events. But how do we provide
support to those who experience a life that includes a
disability that may preclude experiencing a number of the life
events enjoyed by neighbors, friends, and family members? This
session will provide participants with information that is
pertinent to working with individuals with disabilities who are
adjusting to transitions and losses. Topics such as the stages
of grief and loss, the four tasks of mourning, the difference
between normal and dysfunctional responses to transitions and
loss, blocks to successful grieving, helpful responses to those
who are grieving, signs of recovery and guidelines for providing
training, in this regard, to caregivers and family members, will
be presented in a varied, and sometimes experiential, format.
A1 - Dr. Paul Livelli
Partnering
with the University for
Staff
Recruitment and Development
Special education schools
continue to suffer from staff shortages; this shortage
especially rings true in the non-public world. Tapping
into local resources can provide some answers to the
question of how to recruit great teachers to your school
and how to train and assist your current staff
in obtaining full certification. Most local university
teaching programs place students in professional
development schools for internships during a student's
final year. As such, creating a partnership with a
local university can greatly enhance your staff
recruitment opportunities. The development of
a partnership also provides an opportunity for aspiring
teachers to work with the most challenging students in a
supportive environment. This presentation will
describe a private/non-public school's attempt to
recruit new teachers and ensure that existing teachers
are trained and fully certified. The session will also
provide an opportunity for participants to share ideas
from their own programs that have enhanced teacher
recruitment and development.
B1 - Mario Armstrong
Classrooms of the Future, NOW!
A look at
technology trends, the usage of video games and other creative
technologies. Focusing on strategies to help you integrate
creative technology solutions in your administration and the
classroom. This non-intimidating session will outline
case-study examples of using technology in the classroom,
funding suggestions and specific demonstrations of valuable
technologies to use in the classroom environment.
C1 - Susan Barrett
Using
School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (SW-PBS)
to Build
Sustainable Systems within Alternative School Settings
Successful implementation of evidenced
based practices are influenced by of three key components: Core
Implementation (i.e. training and coaching), organizational
components (i.e. evaluation and administration) and external
factors (i.e. social, economic and political variables) . Learn how SW-PBS assists organizations, facilities and
specialized school settings to minimize barriers to
implementation of best practices and maximize school
achievement. Features of sustainability will also be discussed.
D1 - Brenda Considine
Building
Strategic Coalitions for Successful Advocacy Campaigns
Private special education schools operate
in a politically complex environment, and as such, are
influenced by rules, regulations and budget fluctuations at the
local, state and federal level. In addition, private schools are
affected by issues such as an increased emphasis on special
education in the least restrictive environment (LRE); NCLB
requirements; growing efforts to regionalize special education
services; state education funding reform; and school choice
efforts. Private special education schools need to do more than
simply stay abreast of these issues and conditions, they need to
influence them. In New Jersey, private special education schools
have formed or become involved with diverse coalitions which
have allowed them to leverage clout, combine resources, access
decision-makers, and organize to influence media and public
policy. This workshop will describe the work of the New Jersey
Coalition for Special Education Funding Reform as a model for
other states. The Coalition is comprised of ten organizations
including the State's designated protection and advocacy system,
the state parent training organization, several statewide
disability advocacy organizations, and the state council on
developmental disabilities. The coalition has a decade-long
successful record of bringing together and mobilizing parent
groups and advocates. New Jersey's Association of Private
Special Education Schools, ASAH, plays key organizing role.
Workshop attendees will learn about the power of coalitions, how
to develop and expand them, and use them to advance policies
that can benefit private schools. They will learn specific
successful strategies for: 1) Defining the issue(s); 2)
Identifying the players; 3) Developing a play; 4) Maintaining
coalition unity; and 5) Communicating as a coalition.
General Session -
Dr. Doug Fuchs
Why
Special Education Must be the Most Intensive Tier in
a Standards
Driven No
Child Left Behind World:
Implications for Public and Private School Settings
Response to Intervention (RTI) is
the latest major policy initiative that tries to dramatically
reduce the number of children and youth with disabilities and
diminish the importance of special education. An important
assumption held by many supporters of RTI (as well as by full
inclusionists of 2 decades ago) is that special education is
expendable because general education is expandable. In this
presentation, I question this assumption and suggest general
education needs special education, albeit not that which passes
as special education in many places. Rather, there needs to be a
thorough re-thinking of what should be special about special
education. I will suggest that special education (in public and
private settings) must become synonymous with individualized,
data-based, and recursive instruction; delivered by expert
instructors; and delivered to the most difficult-to-teach
children in a school, district, state, or country.
A2 -
Dr. Doug Fuchs
What is
'Scientifically-Based' Instruction?
Implications for
Administrators and Teachers
I will present unpublished findings from a
large, multi-site randomized control study of scaling up an
empirically-validated practice. Implications for adopting
best-evidence practices will be discussed.

Suicide
and Individuals with Disabilities: Guidelines for Prevention &
Crisis Management
Suicide rates among individuals with disabilities are often
higher than rates among those without disabilities. This session
addresses the significant concerns . It includes myths connected
with suicide, risk and protective factors for suicide, signs and
symptoms, suicidal assessment, ethical and legal issues
surrounding suicide; and counseling techniques with individuals,
survivors, and their families. A varied format including
experiential exercises will be used to introduce concepts and
illustrate assessment, counseling, and referral techniques.
Guidelines presented in this session could be used for staff
development.
C2 - Dr. Mindy Malik
& Dr. Bryan Davey
Components of the ACCEL Model
Classroom:
Enhancing Teacher Effectiveness and
Improving Academic and Behavioral Outcomes
This session will present a protocol for assessing and training
teachers in establishing components of an ACCEL model classroom
for students with autism and other developmental disabilities.
This protocol integrates evidence based components, including
the principles of applied behavior analysis, structured teaching
methods, effective instruction, classroom management, and a
functional curriculum. Video illustrations and data analysis
demonstrate the impact on teacher effectiveness and student
achievement across academic and behavioral domains. The
protocol is tied to teacher promotional levels, designed to
increase teacher satisfaction and longevity within the program.
Participants will acquire the fundamentals of ACCEL model
classroom assessment and intervention.

Employment Practices; What You Don't
Know CAN Hurt You!
Trying to weave your way through infinite maze of human
resources issues and employment laws can leave you more than
just dazed and confused, it could land you in jail! Learn what
your organization needs to be able to steer clear of some common
human resources related problems and how to keep you and your
staff out of court.

Benefiting
Special Needs Schools Through Sensitive Design and Green
Elements
A wealth of information is available regarding successful
teaching methods for children with disabilities. But do our
schools’ built-environments foster these methods or could
improvements be made to help support our learning environments
for these kids? Explore how building design, space layout and
facility enhancements, including the use of “green materials”,
promote student independence, increase productivity and reduce
conflict and distraction. Topics for discussion include
Personal Space Issues and the Social Dance; Distraction
Inhibitors; and Colors, Patterns, and Tactile Issues, as well as
several other key design factors that encourage successful
learning. Further, discover the intricacies of “Sustainable
Design” and how green elements not only improve learning but
also save operating dollars and open up additional funding
sources for school construction and marketing opportunities
B3- Chuck Durgin
Turning
the Ship: Moving from a Transition Mindset to an Outcome Driven
Model of Service
Achieving positive student outcomes requires an intensely
focused, highly strategic, and collaborative effort from many
individuals (i.e., students, family members, teachers, related
service staff, community agencies, etc.). The purpose of this
presentation will be to discuss several principles and methods
that can help secondary educational programs adjust their
services to be more outcome-driven. This will include a
discussion of knowledge-based models and direct practices that
can increase staff expertise, enroll greater levels of family
involvement, prioritize programming efforts, secure community
supports, and ultimately improve service delivery.

EDUCATORS
LEADING THE WAY: My Personal Journey Thru Illiteracy
“The
nation has lost confidence in our leaders- the on going war on
terror- the surge in violent crime in much of America…All of
this points to a "lack of leadership". From Afghanistan to Iraq
and to New Orleans post-Katrina and all of the places in
between, I've seen up close and first hand the high cost of what
happens when leadership fails. We have a surplus of Lawyers,
preachers, politicians, etc. Smart people we got. Righteous
leadership - in short supply. My own personal journey thru
illiteracy and stuttering speak to some of the very same
issues: personal responsibility, education and training,
mentoring and nurturing all are key ingredients to making
someone into a LEADER….and that is where you and NAPSEC come
in.”
