Leaders in
Transition: Mentoring the Next
Generation
This interactive session provides a global perspective on
leadership mentoring and succession. A leadership styles instrument
will help identify success factors for institutional and personal
transition. The voices and aspirations of “next generation leaders”
will challenge participants to reflect on and burnish their
mentoring role.
General Session - Dr.
Jim Russell
The Neurobiology of
Learning
This lecture focuses on describing the real world experiences of the
person who has learning issues and ADHD, as well as the neurobiology that
everyone must manage. Topics will include how the brain learns, and
how a person processes meaningful information, with special emphasis
on the
brain
systems that define humanity.
A1 - Pamela Allen
Equitable Participation in Federal Education Programs Under NCLB: What Private Schools Leaders Should Know
This session will provide an outline of the Federal Education
Programs under NCLB in which private school students and teachers can
participate on an equitable basis. Participants will receive copies
of publications from the U.S. Department of Education on this
topic.
C1- Dr. Jim Russell
Neurobiology,
Emotions, and Learning
This session will examine how a person processes emotional issues,
such as, anxiety, depression, and fear. New research indicates that
students more often fail due to emotional factors rather than
cognitive ones.
General Session - Dr.
Rebecca Landa
The Progression of
Autism from Infancy: Evidence from
Prospective Research
In this session, participants will learn about the progression of
motor, cognitive, language, and social impairment in autism from
ages 6-36 months. Data from prospective, longitudinal research
on infants at high and low genetic risk for autism will be shared.
Video examples will illustrate different developmental
pathways in the emergence of autism, and will demonstrate how the very early signs of
autism can be distinguished from typical development. Implications
for early diagnosis of autism will be discussed.
A2 - Dr. James
Earley
Walker Partnerships:
Business Diversification Opportunities for
Private Special Education Providers
This presentation will focus on types of services that a private
special education provider can offer to public and private schools,
collaborative/consortiums and human service
agencies. Strategies of marketing will be reviewed as well as
the concept of value added approach in joint partnerships with
public and private entities.
B2 - Dr. Rebecca
Landa
Intervention Considerations in Children with Autism:
Lessons from
Toddlers with Autism
Core deficits in autism affect social cognition, social-emotional,
and communication. Evidence from early intervention research shows
that major improvements in these aspects of development are
possible. Information will be provided on what skills to
emphasize in intervention, and effective intervention
strategies for children with autism.
C2 - Linda Smith
How to Defend
Yourself Against an IRS Intermediate
Sanction Audit and Current IRS
Rulings and Hot Topics
This session deals with issues concerning executive compensation
leases and loan transactions with related parties.
A3 - Susan Leviton
Hot Topics in
Special Education Law
This session will discuss the challenges for Special Education
Centers presented by increased federal mandates under No Child Left
Behind, high stakes testing and state graduation
requirements. We will also explore issues surrounding discipline,
functional behavior assessments, transitional services, restraints
and seclusion, and other
legal issues.
B3- Bill Bauer
If You Can’t Be Google, You Can Still
Be Great!
While most of us can’t offer the level of pay and benefits of those
corporations famous for their “perks,” there are things that we can
do to make the work life of our employees more rewarding,
interesting, enjoyable, and fun. This workshop will focus on
creating ways to improve employee morale, training, well-being and
retention in an ever more competitive environment.
C3 - Dr. Jade Carter
Out, About and Not
At Home Anymore: Transition to Adult Independence Is Not for the
Faint-Hearted
This session will give an overview of the transition process,
including an analysis of the adult niche and some of the identified life
challenges of American adults. Discussion will also examine family
concerns and issues (money management, sexuality, security, personal
safety and health), developing self-determination and resilience
skills in young adults, and how the change process affects the
individual, the family, and others during transition. Dr.
Carter will also share some of the journeys made by several remarkable young men and
women.

If you are driving from the Ft.
Lauderdale or Miami Airports, please read:
In the event that the Jewfish Bridge is
backed up due to construction,
please find alternate directions below:
Take the Florida Turnpike South all the
way until it ends at U.S.1 South.
Once exiting the Florida Turnpike onto
U.S.1 South, you will find yourself in an area called
Florida City where you’ll find gas stations, fast food - a quick place
to stop before the crossover into the Keys.
Florida City is a short distance –
continue straight on U.S.1 and just as it seems that you are
leaving Florida City, you will see a sign for “Card Sound Road –
Toll Road” – TURN LEFT onto Card Sound Road (An
old 1950’s bar called “Last Chance Saloon” will be on the right side of
U.S.1). **If you miss the left turn, no big deal – you’ll actually
still be on U.S.1 which is the main artery into the Keys.
Card Sound Road is a scenic and
tranquil ride into the Keys….you’ll actually drive through a national
refuge called Crocodile Lake. Continue on Card Sound Road…going through
a $1.00 toll plaza (another 1950’s spot called Alabama Jacks is just
before the toll plaza – lots of history!). Once you pay the toll, you’ll
be about 7 min from a stop sign. TURN RIGHT AT THE STOP SIGN
– heading towards Key Largo. You will merge onto U.S.1 once you get
into Key Largo and reach a blinking light….TURN LEFT AT BLINKING
LIGHT. You’re officially in the Keys and about 60 min from
Hawk’s Cay Resort!!
Everything in the Keys is noted by
those little green “mile markers (MM)” on the side of the road. When
you get off Card Sound Road, you’ll be around MM 112….Hawk’s Cay is on
Duck Key – which is MM 61 and is on the left side (Oceanside).
When you arrive at MM 61, turn left
into Duck Key – you’ll see a cobblestone entrance way with the resort
name on it. Continue straight until you see the next cobblestone
entrance on your left. Turn left and continue straight to the Welcome
Reception.
Hope this helps…travel safe, take
your time, and enjoy the ride!
